GTD and Note-Taking: Capture Everything
David Allen's Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology starts with one critical step: capture everything. Your note-taking system is the foundation of GTD.
The GTD Capture Principle
"Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them." Every open loop—anything pulling at your attention—needs to be captured in a trusted system.
What to Capture
- Tasks and to-dos
- Ideas and thoughts
- Reference information
- Meeting notes
- Project ideas
- Someday/maybe items
The Two-Minute Rule
When processing captured items, if something takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. Otherwise, defer it, delegate it, or file it.
Building a Trusted System
Your capture system must be: - **Ubiquitous** - Always available - **Quick** - Low friction to add items - **Reliable** - You trust it completely - **Regular** - You process it consistently
Weekly Review
GTD requires a weekly review where you: 1. Process all captured items 2. Review all active projects 3. Clear your inboxes 4. Update your task lists
NoteMe for GTD
Implement GTD in NoteMe: - **Inbox** - Quick capture note for new items - **Projects** - One note per project with next actions - **Reference** - Organized notes for reference material - **Someday** - Ideas for the future
The key is consistent capture and regular processing. Get it out of your head and into your notes.
